2018/06/02 Horse Island Maerl Bed
In June 2018, as part of a weeklong survey Andy Jackson (of SubSeaTv) went with scallop diver and SCFF chairman, Ali Hughson to film the maerl bed at Horse Island. The Blue Hope Alliance’s motivation to film this maerl bed was due to the threat of a fish farm proposed just north of it. Lewis Press wrote a short report on the swim over Horse Island which was included in Sea Change Wester Ross’s objection to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. The salmon farm company Scottish Sea Farms subsequently received a CAR licence. Sara Nason created a film which tells the story of the whole survey week called ‘An Underwater Ecosystem & Flowers of the Sea Forest’. However to view the Horse Island maerl bed in isolation see Andy’s videos below.
