2016/08/24 Cathedral Cave
One of the most stunning underwater caves in Wester Ross is Cathedral Cave, on the rocky coast of Tanera Beg. It’s walls were bejewelled with many species of anemone and fish – fringed by kelp. Andy came up from the dive he did with local scallop diver Ali Hughson literally beaming with delight, saying it was absolutely stunning a really precious place.
Sea Change Wester Ross, the Scottish Creel Fishermen’s Federation (SCFF) and SubSeaTV collaborated to undergo a weeklong survey in 2016. The main objective of the survey was to create a baseline map of maerl beds and their condition to monitor recovery and change, to explore areas where new fish farms were proposed (to the east of Tanera, near Horse Island and near Bottle Island) for priority marine features and assess and the seabed under existing fish farms. However we also wanted to go to some of the highlights within the MPA and record some of the beauty in the habitats. On the 24th of August Ali and Andy dived together off Ali’s scallop boat and filmed Cathedral Cave also dubbed Conservation Cave by George Brown who had originally surveyed it in the late 1970’s.
